Barbara was born on April 30, 1950 in Scottsburg, Indiana. Barbara
grew up in the Indianapolis area and attended Northwest High School and later
attended Stewart Business College. Barbars's son Bryan was born in Indianapolis.
In 1976, Barbara relocated to Southern Nevada, eventually making her home in
Henderson. It was here that Barbara completed her education, attending Community
College of Southern Nevada and University of Nevada Las Vegas.
She studied construction management, earning the credentials of certified construction
industry technician. In 1981, Barbara met Manny and they were married in 1989.
Soon after, they formed Gomez
Consulting Group. Barbara and Manny successfully shared both their business
and personal lives. Over the years, Barbara was involved in myriad professional
organizations, social causes, and civic duties.
She is a founder and the first President of Henderson Allied Community Advocates
(HACA). HACA recently celebrated its 15th Anniversary. Barbara remained actively
involved with the organization throughout its entire history. HACA was founded
in 1991 by Barbara Gomez, Pam Erickson, and a handful of concerned citizens
who felt that the growing community of Henderson needed additional social services.
This group began the organization, at first providing zero interest loans to
families in crisis. 15 years later, HACA provides more than half a million dollars
annually to assist individuals and families in crisis to prevent eviction and
loss of utility services. In addition, HACA is a state designated Family Resource
Center, providing services to families needing assistance with everything from
food to child care to budgeting.
HACA is one of only a handful of agencies based in, and focused on serving the
Henderson community. This year, HACA provided services to more than 1800 unduplicated
households, with almost 5200 individuals served.
